Goals and Objectives

The postgraduate fellowship program is committed the goal of providing comprehensive training experiences that facilitate a postgraduate fellow's development as an independent practitioner. The following broad objectives form the foundation of training experiences:

  1. Consolidate core competencies including the attitudes, theoretical knowledge and applied skills necessary for work with a broad range of client issues and problems.
  2. Promote and integrate knowledge, awareness, appreciation, and skills for work with diverse populations, including self-examination and exploration of attitudes toward age, gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, disability, language, and socioeconomic status differences.
  3. Consolidate knowledge, understanding and application of ethical principles and practices in clinical work, including knowledge of laws and regulations as well as the awareness of challenges, recent developments and trends in the field of mental health and its relationship to the larger healthcare system.
  4. Develop a professional identity as an independent practitioner, including the evolution of self-identity from student to professional and the ability to assume professional and personal responsibility for one's work.

Competencies

Postgraduate fellows will also be expected to further develop competence in core areas defined by their discipline, at the level needed provide clinical services as an independent practitioner, with a particular focus on competencies relevant to the collegiate mental health environment. 

Counseling (American Counseling Association, ACA)

  1. Identify as a professional mental health counselor and conduct oneself accordingly
  2. Apply American Counselors Association Code of Ethics to guide professional practice
  3. Apply critical thinking to inform and communicate professional judgments
  4. Engage diversity and difference in practice 
  5. Advance human rights and social and economic justice
  6. Engage in research-informed practice and practice-informed research
  7. Apply theoretical framework in client treatment
  8. Respond to contexts that shape practice
  9. Engage, assess, intervene, and evaluate with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities
