8 Steps to Protect Your Herd from Colds & Viruses
1. Wash Your Hands Frequently: Frequent handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds helps to keep germs
away. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
2. Cover Your Mouth and Nose: Practice respiratory etiquette by covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when
coughing or sneezing. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow,
not into your hands.
3. Throw Away used Tissues: Dispose of tissues in a Lined Trash can and Wash your Hands with Soap immediately
after.
4. Keep Your Hands Off Your Face: Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth; germs are spread this way.
5. Clean Your Home with Disinfectants Regularly: Frequently clean your living quarters and commonly-used surfaces, such as doorknobs,
refrigerator handles, remote controls, cell phones, personal devices, computer keyboards,
countertops, faucet handles, and bathroom areas.
6. No Sharing When Eating: Do not share drinking glasses or utensils.
7. Seek Help and Expert Advice: contact Student Health & Wellness Center for instructions and care. Early care is
key with the flu: if you are seen by a medical provider within 72 hours, we can likely
reduce the impact of the flu. If you are a residential student and think you have
the flu, notify your Resident Assistant and contact the Student Health & Wellness
Center for instructions and care.
8. Don't Go Out and Socialize: Stay home if you are sick. Contact a medical provider for guidance on when you can
return to class. Contact your professors to inform them that you have are sick or
have a fever and find out if you are able to get an extension on assignments that
may be due.
