Bacterial Pathogenesis

microbes

Research in the Bacterial Pathogenesis and Resistance (BPAR) group is focused on understanding the molecular and genetic basis of infectious disease and antimicrobial resistance. Investigators use basic science approaches to determine the mechanisms of disease causation in a number of major human pathogens, including enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC), Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Streptococcus mutans. Additional strengths include sample processing and bio-detection techniques as applied to food, water and bioterrorism, antibacterial DNA vaccine development, and extensive drug design and discovery efforts to develop the next generation of antimicrobial chemotherapeutic agents. The group collaborates extensively with laboratories from the Departments of Chemistry, Engineering, Global Health, Molecular Medicine, and the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, as well as numerous leading scientific groups worldwide.
