Three USF Faculty Members Named to Prestigious Clarivate’s Annual Highly Cited Researchers List

USF Highly Cited Researchers 2020

The three USF faculty are among 6,167 researchers worldwide considered the most influential in their fields.

TAMPA, Fla.  – Three USF faculty members whose work in transportation engineering, mathematics and molecular medicine lead in generating new knowledge in their disciplines were named Wednesday to the prestigious .

The highly anticipated annual list identifies researchers who demonstrated significant influence in their fields through the publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade. Their names are drawn from the publications that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science™ citation index.

Named to the 2020 list were Dr. Fred Mannering, the interim director of USF’s Center for Urban Transportation with a courtesy appointment in the Department of Economics; Dr. Wen-Xiu Ma of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics; and Dr. Vladimir N. Uversky of the Morsani College of Medicine’s Department of Molecular Medicine. All three also made the Highly Cited Researchers list in 2019.

is currently the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering and a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering with a courtesy appointment in Economics. His research interests are in the application of econometric and statistical methods to a variety of engineering problems, highway safety, transportation economics, automobile demand, and travel behavior. His 170 publications have been cited more than 10,000 times.

research interests include applied mathematics, mathematical physics, nonlinear sciences, quantum field theory and symbolic computations. He has been Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Applied Mathematics and Physics, Asian Journal of Mathematics and Physics, and International Journal of Engineering Mathematics and Physics. Dr. Ma has made the highly cited list every year since 2015. His 164 publications have been cited more than 9,500 times.

research is related to protein folding, misfolding and non-folding and understanding their role in various biological processes and human diseases. He has earned highly cited researcher honors since 2014. His 827 publications have been cited more than 52,500 times.

Clarivate’s methodology that determines the “who’s who” of influential researchers draws on the data and analysis performed by bibliometric experts and data scientists at the Institute for Scientific Information™ at Clarivate. It also uses the tallies to identify the countries and research institutions where these scientific elite are based.

The USF faculty members are among 6,167 researchers from more than 60 countries and regions to be recognized this year. This year’s list includes 26 Nobel laureates, including three announced this year:

“In the race for knowledge, it is human capital that is fundamental and this list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers who are having a great impact on the research community as measured by the rate at which their work is being cited by others,” said David Pendlebury, Senior Citation Analyst at the Institute for Scientific Information.
