Humanities & Hops: Irish Studies at USF

Join the 2023-2024 Humanities Institute Faculty Fellowship cohort as they discuss their year-long collaborative research experience on Global Irish Studies at the University of South 91社区 and the exciting ongoing programs that have grown out of their fellowship year. Joining the discussion will be USF graduate students, Hannah Thieryung and Lulu Downing, president and vice-president of the USF Irish Culture and Language Club.

Hosted at New World Tampa, Humanities & Hops is an opportunity for USF faculty to share their research with the community in a fun, casual way at a local brewery. Join us for an evening of discussion on Irish Studies at USF. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Come early to grab a seat and a bite to eat.

Graduate Humanities Symposium

Open to all USF graduate students conducting research in the humanities (regardless of major), the Graduate Humanities Symposium provides great experience for your C.V. or professional resume, as well as opportunities to network with other graduate students.

Event details

Applications are OPEN for the 2024 Graduate Humanities Symposium. This symposium is accepting papers for panel discussion. Your research does not need to be complete at the time of application.

Applications are due September 18.

This one-day graduate research symposium will take place on Friday, October 11, 2024 in the Marshall Student Center on the USF Tampa campus. There is no cost to participate. Free breakfast and lunch is provided for presenters as well as a swag bag.

Faculty interested in serving as a panel moderator can contact Liz Kicak. The symposium is also free to attend for audience members. Check back for our full schedule at the end of September and come support our graduate students.


A Poetry Reading with Alison C. Rollins

Alison Rollins will be the inaugural poet in the Garry Fleming Poetry Series, hosted by the Humanities Institute and the Michael Kuperman Memorial Poetry Library. She will join USF students for a workshop and give a public reading.

Event details

Alison C. Rollins will read and perform from her groundbreaking collection Black Bell (Copper Canyon Press, 2024). Inspired by the nineteenth-century image of an enslaved woman wearing iron horns and bells, these poems explore the intersections between individual experience and collective memory. Rollins was named a 2023-2024 Harvard Radcliffe Institute Fellow and a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellow in 2019. She is an assistant professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

An Evening with Ocean Vuong

MacArthur grant winning novelist, Ocean Vuong, is the author of On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous and Time is a Mother. He will visit USF for a conversation and Q&A about his writing process, influences, and themes behind his groundbreaking debut novel and poetry.

Ocean Vuong is an award-winning poet and the author of On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous, a work hailed as an 鈥渆xpansive and introspective, fragmented and dreamlike鈥oming of age tale鈥 by the Los Angeles Times. Adored by the literary community and college campuses alike, Vuong鈥檚 talks are thoughtful and engaging discussions on his equally brilliant works.

Born in Saigon, Vietnam, Vuong was raised in Hartford, CT and now lives in Northampton, MA, where he serves as an Assistant Professor in the MFA Program for Poets and Writers at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Spring 2025

6th Annual Undergraduate Humanities Conference

Open to all USF undergraduate students, this free conference is a platform to present midterm or final research projects. Students can present a paper for panel discussion, a creative project, or participate in the poster session.

Application open October 1. This is when students are asked to submit a brief abstract of their project. All application questions can be found in the FAQ section of the conference webpage.
