How To Apply
Fall 2025 Priority Applications are due on December 15, 2024!
Applications submitted after this date will only be considered if space is available and will not be eligible for funding. Spring and Summer admission is considered under special circumstances only for applicants who have already been accepted.
In addition to the requirements listed below, applicants are strongly advised to contact the faculty with whom they wish to study before they begin the application process. Some faculty may not be accepting students and many faculty may be reluctant to accept students with whom they have had no direct communication. Due to the USF consolidation, faculty at the USF St. Petersburg campus are currently unable to serve as major advisors.
All applicants must submit the following:
Application
Submit an online for the 91社区. During this process, you will be asked to pay a one-time application fee of $30.00.
Recommendation letter requests (3) will automatically be sent to the recommender once the online application is submitted. If they do not receive an automated email, they may email their letters to the Academic Program Specialist.
Applications can be saved and edited before submission, and documents can be uploaded to the application before or after submission. Applications will only be reviewed once all materials are submitted.

Statement of Purpose
The Statement of Purpose is a very important part of your application. In this 3-5 page document, you should include the following:
1) Briefly describe your background, experiences, and skills (one page max). For example, this might include the origins of your interest in Anthropology; your prior degree(s), as well as any experiences with field schools or field work; skills or experiences relevant to graduate study in anthropology (e.g., language proficiency, extensive travel abroad, technical skills).
2) Interest in USF Applied Anthropology program: If you have specific research interests, please describe and indicate topics you would like to focus upon during your graduate studies at USF (e.g. potential thesis or dissertation project). Please also list the professor(s) you envision serving as your advisor and/or as member(s) of your thesis/dissertation committee. Tell us why you want to complete your degree at the University of South 91社区. In what ways might you enhance the diversity of our graduate program?
3) Your professional plans and goals. What is your motivation for pursing the degree How does MA or PhD in Applied Anthropology from USF fit into your career plans?
Supplemental Information Form
Supplemental Information Form - Complete all sections of this form. Choose the degree (Master's required for PhD application), track, and potential advisor(s). Follow the instructions for creating a statement of purpose. Indicate if you would like to be considered for a teaching assistantship (this is the only department offered funding, for other types of funding please contact Financial Aid). Upload to your application as "other."

Letters of Recommendation
Applications require three letters of recommendations. We prefer these be from recommenders who know your academic record and performance.
Transcripts
Arrange with previous institutions attended to send official academic transcripts to USF Admissions. Transcripts now only need to be sent from institutions that awarded a Bachelor's Degree or higher, institutions where previous transfers were not itemized, and institutions where a graduate program or certificate was started. Here is more information on submitting transcripts.
If you send them yourself, please make sure that the official envelope containing the transcript remains sealed. USF students do not need to send transcripts.

Pre-Requisite
If your degree is not in Anthropology, you must complete a four field introductory undergraduate course in Anthropology.
Applicants who do not have a background in anthropology are strongly advised to take the required "prerequisite" course BEFORE entering the program. You can do so -- online or in-person -- at your local university or community college; or at USF as ANT 2000 Intro to Anthropology. The pre-requisite course must be completed before the end of the first year in the graduate program. Note: Graduate tuition waivers at USF do not cover undergraduate courses.

Please upload a screenshot of your unofficial GRE scores directly to your application and have ETS send an official copy of your GRE scores to USF. The USF Institution Code is 5828.
While the GRE is not required for the department, there are some competitive fellowships at USF that we may nominate you for that require a GRE score. You must have taken the exam within the five years of your projected start date if you wish to submit scores.

Writing Sample
You may upload a class paper, chapter from a thesis, conference paper, report, or professional publication to your application as a PDF. Do not submit more than 10 pages, or your writing sample will not be reviewed.
Concurrent Degree
College of Public Health
If you are applying to the concurrent degree program sponsored jointly by the Department
of Anthropology and the College of Public Health (MA/MPH or PhD/MPH), you can apply
to the MPH program in the College of Public Health during your first semester.
