USF Global Spotlight
Ryan Grabau
Ryan Grabau, Class of 2019
July 3, 2018
As a junior majoring in biomedical sciences while minoring in public health and deaf studies, Ryan studied abroad in the program. During that summer semester in Italy, he participated in a course called Physician Observation, where 20 USF students observed physicians from numerous specialties. Throughout the program, Ryan was able to witness ophthalmology surgeries, sports medicine procedures, orthopedic treatment, and his personal favorite, robotic surgeries. As part of the course, each student wrote a chapter of a textbook to be published in the Italian healthcare system.
Now, one year later, Ryan is building on his study abroad experience by traveling to Oxford University in England to present his chapter 鈥淢edical Ethics with an Italian Perspective鈥 at the 2018 International Health Congress. His research traces the evolution of medical deontology from an Italian perspective and analyzes how the Italian health care system addresses medical ethics cases. 鈥淚 can unequivocally state that without my USF study abroad experience, I would not be in the position that I am in today. Because of my trip, not only was I able to publish a paper but also presented it at an international health conference. I cannot wait for my next USF study abroad experience.鈥
