Certified divers may make arrangements to be guided for many reasons. Resort owners use guides to make their diving operations more efficient, and to enhance guests enjoyment. Dive guides cannot assume the role of personal safety guardian or lifeguard. Guides should point out that although their assistance is available, divers must be responsible for themselves, and also a diver s buddy will almost always be closer. NAUI members serving as guides should tell participants beforehand to what extent their guiding role might be compromised by other leadership responsibilities. Whatever the specific circumstances, a NAUI leader s primary commitment remains to help foster safer diving. Group Organization The maximum number of certified divers a NAUI leader may guide underwater will depend on the activity and divers. Anticipation as well as heightened awareness are important. Separation Divers must understand that they have the responsibility of maintaining contact with their guide. The procedures to be followed in event of separation should be established in the pre-dive briefing. Equipment Problems Divers should enter the water with fully functioning equipment. Nevertheless, minor equipment problems may occur during diving and must be dealt with. Exceeding Maximum Planned Depth A diver who exceeds the planned maximum depth creates a problem for everyone in the group to whom the guide is responsible. The guide s appropriate action is a difficult choice, but should be in line with that larger responsibility. Air Consumption Problems Low air contingencies should be discussed in the briefing. If a diver runs low on air, that buddy team should end the dive and exit. Injuries and Accidents As trained professionals, NAUI members are expected to help divers underwater and at the surface as best they can. x!            r  | 0|9 @P * 2 H | 0޽h ? ̙33   0  ~ @ (  X  C    9 ~   S h9  @  9   v Buddy Teams Even though a group is diving together under a leader s guidance, individual buddy pairs, responsible for themselves and each other, still comprise any group. Guides may facilitate buddy pairs forming, making introductions and suggestions. However, assigning people into buddy teams is not part of the guide or divemaster s role, and such pairings are not within their power to enforce. Entry Procedures If an Activity Divemaster is directing from the surface, the guiding leader can enter the water before the group. If no other leadership personnel are present, it is generally better for guides to assist divers while they make their entries and enter last. In this case, the guide should be geared up and ready to respond if an in-water problem develops . When appropriate, a surface meeting point should be arranged and agreed upon. Descent Procedures Guiding divers during descent is one of the most difficult aspects of any dive. If possible, it is best to have the group descend along a line and assemble on the bottom before proceeding. Anyone who cannot descend should abort the dive and wait for the next one. It is acceptable if people slow to equalize continue to descend steadily.d         D lH  0޽h ? ̙33-  0 `}(  X  C    9   S 9  @  9  Positioning Procedures Successful guiding depends on positioning. Position yourself in relation to the terrain, and position divers for maximum visibility and control. Each dive presents special circumstances and positioning decisions. For example: Serve as the maximum depth indicator, keeping the group shallower than you. Position the least experienced divers closest to you. Position dive teams on either side instead of having a group follow. Hover above while a group dives in a well-defined, confined area. Consider the extra difficulty in keeping track of divers in three dimensions. If a second leader is assisting, that person should trail the group. Ascent and Exit Procedures Ascent and exit techniques and precautions should be explained. Guided divers should ascend on a line, whenever possible. Since guided divers are certified, buddy teams may ascend independently of the group. Guides should stay with the majority of the divers, and generally exit the water last.  ! Follow the supervising instructor s directions regarding any underwater tour. Review any special signals that may be used during the tour and assign students the positions they will be expected to maintain throughout the dive. Continue moving in one direction until a new direction is indicated. Escorts should indicate the positions students are to assume for the tour and may aid them in assuming their positions. Adjust their swimming pace to accommodate students abilities; encourage students to move slowly and gracefully through the water. During the dive, have students check and communicate their cylinder pressure to each other, and their escort. Plan for contingencies and explain them to escorted students in advance. Instruct students on ascent procedures prior to the dive. Students should maintain the same ascent rate as their escort If possible, make a precautionary decompression stop 5 meters (15 feet), even though a stop may not normally be required from the training depth. Post-dive Activities The instructor will conduct a formal debriefing of the training experience for the entire group.
