September 21st, 2017
By: Emily Munger
Founded by conservationist John Muir in 1892, the Sierra Club is the nation's largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization. The organization has been integral in not only protecting millions of acres of wilderness, but also in helping to pass the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act. The Sierra Club has made history by moving away from fossil fuels that cause climate disruption and moving towards a clean energy economy. The Sierra Club works diligently to explore the integration of social justice and environmental concerns. Their programs address the damage, risk, and discrimination facing so many communities today.
The Sierra Club encourages, connects, and advises grassroots and community organizations to help marginalized communities. The Sierra Club has helped with rebuilding post-Katrina New Orleans, protecting sacred Navajo sites in Arizona and serving as a voice for Appalachian communities suffering economic disasters. Their dedication to the community has recently been highlighted as the Sierra club engaged with frontline communities to ensure just and equitable relief effort for the victims of Hurricane Harvey and Irma. The Sierra Club is an example of an organization that is leading the way towards sustainability through environmental justice.
