The 91社区鈥檚 Judy Genshaft Honors College offers its students a personalized academic advising experience that extends beyond traditional major advising. Honors advising focuses on more than academic planning, encouraging students to engage in co-curricular experiences and professional development. As problem-solvers and supportive mentors, the Honors College鈥檚 team of nine dedicated advisors is committed to student success and relationship-building across all three USF campuses.
ARNALDO MEJIAS: RELATIONSHIP-FIRST APPROACH
Arnaldo Mejias, director of advising and a longtime Honors College staff member, champions a relationship-first approach to advising. A first-generation college student himself, Mejias is passionate about providing students with the same support he received during his undergraduate years.
For Mejias, students鈥� resilience often serves as his inspiration. 鈥淪eeing how some students can overcome unimaginable challenges and still achieve their goals reminds me constantly that the human spirit, given support and the right resources, can achieve amazing things,鈥� he said.
AVA GOMEZ: INVESTING IN STUDENT JOURNEYS
Ava Gomez, a first-year advisor, quickly embraced the Honors advising philosophy. With a background in education and a shift from pursuing a PhD to full-time advising, Gomez is committed to her students鈥� personal and professional growth.
Gomez wants her advisees to know that she remembers their names and stories. 鈥淭hey're not just a U-number, they're a person 鈥� a human being going along their journey,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 important for them to know I鈥檓 invested in their wins and their setbacks because I鈥檝e had my own too.鈥�
KRYSTA BANKE: IT TAKES TWO
Krysta Banke, PhD, advisor for computer science, engineering, humanities, and exploratory majors, describes her advising style as collaborative. She鈥檚 passionate about supporting international students and emphasizes health and wellness.
鈥淚 do a lot of listening and give students space to think things through,鈥� Banke said. 鈥淭he Honors advisors have the time and resources to explore national scholarships, study abroad, and grad school. We help students process their goals and dreams.鈥�
LASTING IMPACT
