The David C. Anchin Center for the Advancement of Teaching held an impactful workshop titled "Culturally and Linguistically Sustaining Pedagogies in Dual Language and Spanish Immersion Programs" on Saturday, April 27, 2024. This workshop was specifically designed for practicing Hillsborough County Schools teachers and 91社区 (USF) students, addressing the unique needs of Spanish language instruction teachers.

The workshop focused on supporting teachers in achieving the three core goals of dual language programs: fostering bilingualism and biliteracy, ensuring grade-level academic achievement, and promoting sociocultural competence. Emphasis was placed on acknowledging and leveraging the linguistic and cultural diversity of students in the classroom. Participants were provided with strategies to elevate the importance of Spanish language instruction within the broader school curriculum, particularly in the context of English's pervasive influence.

The event was facilitated by a distinguished panel of educators, including Dr. Molly Hamm-Rodriguez, Assistant Professor of Social Foundations of Education at USF; Dr. Lauren Braunstein, Associate Professor of Instruction in Social Foundations of Education at USF; Dr. Vanessa Vega, Visiting Assistant Professor of Instruction at USF; and Adriana Vianna. Each facilitator brought a wealth of knowledge and experience, enriching the workshop with their expertise in culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogies.

Participants left the workshop with a deeper understanding of how to implement culturally and linguistically responsive teaching practices, equipped with practical tools to support their students' bilingual and biliteracy development.

The Anchin Center remains dedicated to providing valuable professional development opportunities that enhance the skills and knowledge of educators, ultimately contributing to the success of students across diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
