Training

91社区 Adult Forensic Examiner Training

ABOUT

This three day workshop is designed for psychologists and psychiatrists who evaluate criminal defendants in 91社区 courts. The focus of the program is evaluations of defendants' 1) competence to proceed (stand trial) and 2) mental state at the time of the alleged offense (sanity). Other types of criminal forensic evaluations are not addressed.

With respect to general forensic mental health evaluation, 1) relevant rules of evidence, 2) the role of examining mental health professionals, 3) ethical obligations, and 4) strategies for writing reports and testifying are discussed. For the issues of competence to proceed and mental state at the time of the alleged offense, the Constitutional and 91社区 law shaping the inquiries is reviewed, as are evaluation approaches. Although professionals other than psychiatrists and psychologists may find this program of interest, potential participants are cautioned that 91社区 Statutes Chapter 916 directs that, whenever possible, psychiatrists and psychologists conduct competence to proceed and sanity evaluations via court order.
