BIOGRAPHY

Nadia Marie Johnson is a first-year doctoral student in the Department of Communication at the 91社区. Her research and teaching interests include Black studies, critical media and cultural studies, and digital media studies coupled with women's, gender, and sexuality studies. Nadia Marie is particularly interested in Black women's media representation and how race- and gender-based discriminatory practices impact our perceptions and understanding of Black women in our daily lives. Her research also focuses on how these media representations affect Black women's livelihoods from various perspectives, such as their socioeconomic status. Nadia Marie draws inspiration from her experiences in girlhood and daily life to shape her research and to bring a passionate approach to topics relative to the field of communication. 

Nadia Marie earned a B.A. in Communication Arts ('22) from Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), Charlotte, North Carolina's only HBCU, and an M.A. in Communication with a Graduate Concentration in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies ('24) from Wake Forest University. Aside from her studies, she has served as a student leader, founded two JCSU student support groups, Bullooming and Transfer Student Association, and has received funding to participate in a study abroad program. Nadia Marie is a proud member of the illustrious Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., where she remains committed to local and global service, and Lambda Pi Eta, exhibiting her commitment to communication scholarship. 

Nadia Marie is a recipient of USF's University Graduate Fellowship.
